What is the difference between onions and leeks aside from appearance?

Leeks are milder, but you'll probably have to cook with them frequently to appreciate the nuances.

Yes, leeks are milder and sweeter. While the are a member of the allium (onion) family they bring something different to the party. Leeks are considered a Welsh symbol, possibly introduced by the Romans who were outrageously fond of leeks going back to the time of Apicius.
