Simple but really good!
In the early 1900's, chicken was expensive, but veal and pork were not. They took pork and veal chunks, skewered them, breaded them, browned them and then baked them. I think they were supposed to look like chicken legs. If you look online, you'll see there are as many versions as there are for fried chicken. Maybe your friend could look at them and determine which one sounds like her mom's.
