Why are "refried beans" re-fried ?

The beans are cooked in water or stock then not even fried but sauteed. I do it with garlic and cilantro, of course spices and salt whatever you like. Cook garlic in oil for a minute add everything else then add some stock cook down a few minutes. Them mash it all up.

They're not; something got lost in translation. In Mexican Spanish, the prefix "re-" often serves as an intensifier, like "very" or "well." So frijoles refritos means "well-fried" beans, not fried-again beans.
