moong does not fit the physical definition of the lentils (the convex lens/disc shaped). they look like miniature tic tacs (dare I say it, 'minion' shaped) and dark green with the skin ad a light shade of yellow when skinned. this is what the skinned split ones look like (after being hydrated)

indicates that moong lentils (or moong dal) are mung beans that are skinned and split. As such, one would expect moong dal to cook faster than whole green mung beans.
