Personally, I find that the best tortillas are fresh, and I mean made *TODAY*, the same way I feel about bread, tofu, and ice cream.

My local Mexican grocery stores usually get fresh tortilla deliveries every day and if you go at the right time, some of the bags will still be warm. I live in California, so getting good tortillas is not a challenge. Sure, most of them wouldn't be classified as "artisanal" but they are darned good.
