Taste difference between types of flour

Is there a difference in taste in the final product between self rising flour and all purpose flour? Recipe calls for flour. I used all purpose flour. Mother in law makes same thing with self rising. Husband thinks they taste different. I think they taste the same.

Self rising flour has (lower protein) AP flour as base and has additional baking powder and a bit of salt. So just using AP flour to replace self rising flour should result in less expansion and less salty goods.
