Actually I know for a fact that Land-O-Lakes makes whole sticks(1 cup) and half sticks (1/2cup)

not to argue but I think those half-sticks are 2 oz each so 1/4 cup.

It would be 1 cup - 16 tablespoons of butter

Perfect thank you! I just know some butter comes in 1 cup sticks and 1/2 cup sticks.

I don't think so, Rachel. I've been baking for 70 years and have never seen 1-cup sticks. All of them are 4 ounces - 1/2 cup.

Don't confuse volume ounces with weight ounces—think of how much space (in cups) a pound of marshmallows take up, for example . . .

A stick is nearly always 4 oz. which is a ½ c....so the recipe is calling for a cup, or 8 oz. of butter.
Its such a mystery to me why anyone measures butter by sticks or cups, though.

A stick is 8 Tbs, or ½ C., so measuring is really easy; it's a time-saver, and not everyone has access to a scale.
