I think this an item which varies greatly based on region. The first Stromboli I ever ate was in Philadelphia. It was the size of a large pizza crust folded in to a half moon shape. The filling contained layers of Italian cold cuts and cheese. There were also Italian peppers in the filling. I don't recall sauce being offered as a side.
I live in the Midwest and have been craving that Philly Stromboli but can't find it. I've been to one place which served what the called a Stromboli and was served with sauce on top. It was the size of a calzone. Often Stromboli and calzone seem to be terms that are interchangeable.
To me, a Stromboli is what I ate in Philadelphia and has no sauce but I'm sure others would disagree.
