Sounds paradoxical...if they whipped up, they were surely only whites.
Quick online search reveals possible causes - from old eggs or packaged whites, which may have picked up flavors, to not enough sugar.
If taste is unbearable, start over.
If only slighly bad, cover with your toppings - and maybe use a heavier hand than normal on them.
