What causes a cake to have perfect texture on top half of layer and the bottom half looks thick and not crumbly

I have baked this and other cakes many times, and have had this happen only a few times. I would still like to know what causes it. Did I hurry the sugar, butter, egg mixing too much? Thank you for your help.

Hi Nancy, that's so frustrating. I'm guessing it might have been a touch underbaked, if the bottom looked thick, but hopefully this gets some more eyes (and answers!) on it.
