While the cake itself is very moist, rich, and chocolatey, I do think without the frosting on top, it might be missing some delightful sweetness and creaminess—it'd end up being more like a muffin than a cake (though there's absolutely nothing wrong with a muffin!). I guess if you're looking for something more like an everyday snacking cake, sans frosting could work great. But if you're looking for something a little richer and more special to serve as a show-stopping dessert, the frosting is really delicious and well worth making.
