Why should I avoid a plastic shower curtains? Thank you.

look for PEVA plastic curtains. They don't give of the fumes like PVC curtains.

I hate plastic shower curtains. They have to be replaced so often, or they get grotty. Much better to buy a fabric liner with a pretty fabric curtain and be able to wash just the liner as often as I like.
