My guess is it's supposed to be 2 medium sized sweet potatoes, not pieces. Of course that still doesn't get you to precise measurements, but considering it's a soup consisting largely of sweet potato and stock, I don't think the flavors will be thrown off if you make a judgement call on what constitutes "medium" here.
