Can someone provide more detail about the size or amount of onion?

Yellow onions vary wildly in size. I buy the single large onions these days and I have a feeling one of those would be overkill.

Hi Lydia (that's my daughter's name), I actually use one small-ish yellow onion.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. So, I'm going to guesstimate it and use about one-fourth to one-third of a large onion.

Yes, Lydia is a family name. It really is a lovely name, although I didn't always feel that way growing up. I think it's easier now that it's experiencing a bit of a comeback. The history of the name is fascinating.

Ours is a family name as well, and I also love its history. In every school, university, or group of any sort, she has always been the only Lydia. Some friends liked it so much that they gave it to their daughter as her middle name. Happy holidays to you.

Hi! Taking a look at this recipe, it does call for a lot (1 pound) of chicken livers, so we think a large (softball sized) onion would be the right choice here.

Thanks so much for your response, but I'm going to defer to "boulangere"'s response.
