I’m sure fresh crabmeat would work as well.  Certainly don’t know why it wouldn’t...it tastes better than canned, so it would probably be better than the original.

Thank you, and what about fresh crab meat? Since you posted you tried fresh but it didn't work out, I'm wondering if full fat cream cheese would compensate for the texture?

I cannot imagine the recipe would suffer from using regular cream cheese.
