Making it vegetarian? What would I sub for the anchovies?

I don't want to miss out on this recipe - it sounds amazing on top of simple! The description mentions the possibility of making this vegetarian. I am thinking dried porcinis or shitakes to replace the anchovies? Not sure about quantity though...

Mary - if you want the jammy texture, just omit the anchovies.
If you want the Umami taste, go for something vegetable and fermented or salted.
Both will, yes, taste slightly different from the original.
