Adding milk in kneading stage of challah

Help! I'm making a traditional Easter Tsoureki/challah type bread, and realized while kneading the dough was super dense and I forgot the milk. I added the milk required very slowly while kneading and adding more flour, making a mess, but I'm wondering if adding the milk at this stage is too late for a good rise? I added at the first rise. Any advice is appreciated!!

Hi there! I've totally done this before (oops!), and still have had success with rising. The bread just may require a bit more time to relax/rise.
