Help, I am fitting out my new kitchen and have decided on an island. 4000x1000. Within this area I need to incorporate the sink and electric hob.

Hi Mark,

I have recently rebuilt my kitchen and the best advice I can give you is to trust your intuition. I hired an architect and highly regarded interior designer. The architect was fabulous but it was obvious to me that the designer had never cooked a meal in her life. I was distraught and overwhelmed but I had to let her go and get in the driver’s seat! I designed the most beautiful kitchen that works perfectly for my family. I had no confidence that it would work out but I knew I would never be happy with a “pretty” kitchen that was not efficient.

If you think the sink and hob should be at opposite ends it is probably because you understand how best you will use your space. Maybe you are not the only cook in your home and two smaller prep spaces make better sense, so you can both work independently.
One decision that I am very happy with is my Galley made sink, it has many accessories and cutting boards and inset colander and bowl that sit in the sink and turn the entire sink into a work surface flush with the counter.
I hope you find this helpful.

Have you chosen your sink and cooktop yet? Knowing these dimensions will make it easier. You will probably need a dishwasher near the sink for convenience and to save the considerable extra cost of an additional water connection.

Hi
The sink will be a standard size single. The material is corian.
The hob will be approx 700x700
The problem I have is layout.
As it’s my only workspace ,I wanted to keep the hob and sink at opposite ends this leaving me a large prep area in the middle.
Aesthetically it looks more balanced to bring them closer together.
What I really need is advice on weather the prep area should be divided into two areas or one large area ?
Kind regards. Mark
