My sourdough starter smells more fermented than sour and the lid popped off the jar when I took it out of the fridge yesterday. Is that ok, normal?

Yes, sounds normal. Starters can vary a lot, but mine doesn't smell sour unless it's getting pretty old needs to be refreshed. At that point acetic acid (what makes vinegar sour) builds up and it smells sour, but I wouldn't want to bake with that. When it's fresh, it does smell fermented and a little fruity. As far as the lid popping off, if it concerns you just leave the lid loosened in your container. My starter has plastic wrap draped over the top, and the lid set on top but not screwed closed. This way it doesn't ever dry out, but the gases can escape.

That sounds normal considering this is a fermentation process and alcohol is one of the byproducts.
