Corn meal substitute - Can other type of break crumbs work?

Can panko, crumbled whole wheat crackers be substituted w/o changing the consistency and cooking ability? thanks!

They will give a slightly different taste than (white) bread crumbs, but will give similar consistency and require no change in cooking method.
