IS BURNED OLIVE OIL SMOKE LETHAL?

Last night I brushed flatbread with olive oil when preparing a pizza crust and put it on the rack in a 450 oven and forgot to put drip protection beneath it. The OVOO dripped into the bottom of the oven and almost caught fire. Our apartment was FILLED with smoke. Smoke alarm went off, every room full of smoke... This morning I go online to find the best way to clean the burned oil out of my oven and instead I am bombarded with a million articles about how olive oil smoke causes lung cancer and can otherwise permanently damage your lungs. Why after so many years of cooking, reading cooking articles and watching cooking shows have I never come across this information before? Now I am filled with anxiety and dread. Is there anything to it?

Smoke in general is carcinogenic, but don't worry about a single exposure. You're not going to die from flatbread dripping smoke.
