Is powdered buttermilk as effective as cultured buttermilk for brining chicken/turkey

Samin Nosrat's recent recipe in the Times for brining turkey in buttermilk does not address this issue -- hoping for help from this community. The question is whether the acid in the buttermilk is the effective agent or the effect of the cultures
