Why is cream of tartar used in the cream? I know it really helps egg whites to whip

It’s sometimes used in whipped cream for the same reason it’s used in whipping egg whites...a stabilizer. I use gelatin if I need to hold whipped cream for a while, and have never used cream of tartar for that purpose, but I e heard of it.
