What do you do with the other half of the onion?

So what do you do with the other half of the onion set aside at the beginning of the recipe? No further mention of it is made 6in the directions.

In step 2, you fry the remaining chopped onion in lard, and then add in the beans to cook. It doesn't tell you to chop it, but if you watch the video after he removes the portion he uses for the salsa he chops the remainder and sets it aside.
