Swamp pie variations with buttermilk

Hello! I was looking to make the blueberry swamp pie recipe, but I was interested in swapping out the normal custard for a buttermilk custard. Similar to a buttermilk pie variation. Would it be simple enough to swap out the amount of heavy cream in Erin McDowells recipe for buttermilk? Or would it be more sensible to make a normal buttermilk custard and use it for the flood? Thank you!
