Agree it is confusing, with three different possibilities. If you like the idea of this cake, maybe go ahead and 1) make it with the pans you have (two pans to yield either two or four layers, or three pans to yield three). 2) assemble and frost. 3) photograph and report in the comments on this cake...to everyone's relief! You’re right; it’s confusing. Step 12 says “ Assemble the cake: Use a serrated knife to remove the domed top of the cakes, if desired, and then cut each cake into 2 layers—you should have 4 layers total.” But the photo does only show 3 layers. Maybe the author will comment.
