Green bird eye chili substitute ?

The recipe author discusses this in the headnote:

"I call for bird’s-eye chiles, but, in a pinch, feel free to substitute a jalapeño or any hot chile pepper you like."

The sole commenter said they used a Serrano pepper successfully.
