Sugar quantity in iStrawberry Rhubarb Icebox cake

I also see the sugar quantity in the icebox cake/brittle section says it's 2 cup sugar, divided, but it does not say how it is divided. I was really looking forward to making this today and am a confident home cook, but I assume there are good reasons for how recipe instruction are crafted and want to make sure the sugar ends up in the right place at the right time. ??
