Leaving aside the topic of unauthorized access, the best storage conditions for hard liquor are: stable temperature between 55°F and 70°F without major fluctuations, upright bottles, and away from direct sunlight.
If your garage provides these conditions then go for it.
I forgot to mention that the main reason not to store hard liquor at higher temperatures is because heat accelerates oxidation (which results in lower quality).
Unsurprisingly 55°F is the recommended temperature for storing wine. Wine bottles should be stored horizontally to keep corks moist.
