Coconut and Nuts Mandatory in Recipe?

If I don’t want to add the nuts or coconut, how does that change the recipe?

The coconut and nuts bring additional flavors as well as a bit of texture to the cake. Carrot cake tends to be on the moist and dense side of things, and coconut helps with that. The nuts prevent it from being just a mouthfeel of soft mush, and your teeth have something useful to do. You could leave them out, of course.

Agree with Lori’s comments.
Further, depending on original poster’s taste (and/or allergies) one could replace the coconut with another dried fruit and the nuts with another nut/seed.
