For me: whipped cream every time. I find meringue underwhelming in flavor.

As for the browning bananas: you can toss it with a little lemon juice or acidulated water, or use Fruit Fresh which is a mixture of citric acid (lemon juice), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and dextrose (a sugar similar to glucose).

I made Bon Appetit's Banoffee pie for Thanksgiving, which has bananas and a whipped topping that's stabilized with instant pudding mix. We were skeptical, but it was delicious, and covering the bananas completely with the cream kept them fresh, and the cream didn't weep at all! https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/banoffee-pie

(and we had slivers of it in the fridge for a day or two after, though it was the first of the pies to be polished off.)

We are team whipped cream, and to keep the bananas from browning, you fill the pie crust with half the pastry cream, layer the bananas on top, then spread the remaining pastry cream over the bananas so they're covered, and then top with whipped cream. https://food52.com/recipes/82063-best-banana-cream-pie-recipe

This is one way to do it, curious what others suggest!
