Lentils aren't listed in the ingredients. What is the amount in the soup and are they cooked or raw?

Ahchavez -

When in doubt, I look for another recipe that's similar if not identical.
A good site called GialloZafferano has a lentil spelt soup designed to serve 4 (as is the one you cited).
It uses 1 1/4 cup dried lentils.

That's too funny, I live in Italy and was deciding between this Food 52 recipe and the Giallo Zafferano one yesterday. I wanted to know about this particular recipe because it called for cooked spelt (which I already had on hand) along with cooked lentils. Anyway, the soup was delicious.

Yes funny coincidence!
Glad the soup was good.

For futures, for adjusting recipes, I generally expect
• cooked grain to stand in for about half that in dried amount.
• one unit of dried grain equals about double in cooked.
