Huckleberry: Zoe Nathan's Warm, Beautiful, Messy Celebration of Breakfast

September 12, 2014

You know how some people are obsessed with stamp collections or fantasy football teams? Well, we're obsessed with cookbooks. Here, in Books We Love, we'll talk about our favorites.

Today: A sunny breakfast book that will soon be covered in flour, from a bakery in California. (Psst: We're giving away a copy!)

Huckleberry  Huckleberry

Shop the Story

There are a few ways in which a cookbook can stand out from the pack. A big name helps. Clear, inviting photography is very successful in yanking our eyes away from other titles. Personality, though, might be the most compelling reason to love and pay for a cookbook right now, especially when it will be joining the ranks of your existing collection.

I am not talking about TV personality-personality. I am talking about the way that reading a person’s story endears you to their book and their food, and makes the idea of cooking feel new. It’s like going to a dinner party and being smitten with the way a person cooks: how they quietly serve salads that make your eyes wide or slyly set a bottle of amaro on the table when bellies are full but nobody is ready to leave. Or maybe they just have a kicky apron and they wear it well.

Such is Zoe Nathan’s Huckleberry, a breakfast book that has you cheering for Nathan and her story and her food before its first recipe; you’ll be hugging it, unironically, by the end. It’s full of photos that toe the food porn-line but dismount squarely on the classy side, Mary Lou Retton-Style. Her recipes feel familiar (many a muffin, scone, cake, fruity baked thing, and brunchy egg dish), but they’re somehow more. They are unfussy but still special, still at home in a book whose fore-edge design is a bright canary yellow with white polka dots. “It’s like the food you make at home, but better,” Nathan recently told me.

Huckleberry
This is a Cherry Tomato and Goat Cheese Cobbler!

The ideas of “home” and “family” are themes that weave through the entire book: Nathan’s father was one of her first line cooks; she owns Huckleberry with her husband, Josh Loeb; she has a very nurturing streak though she’s not afraid to yell at unruly customers or at bakers who show up late. “Writing the book kind of coincided with me starting to have a family and wanting to create a home beyond my restaurant,” she says. “I love the idea of kids growing up with it.”

The introductions to each chapter follow the progress of a morning at Huckleberry: First up come muffins at 3:30, then biscuits and scones at 4, and so on. It walks us through what the early morning of a baker looks like, which is especially illuminating for those of us who have always fantasized about the job, about being awake before the rest of the world and starting our days shaping and mixing and smelling the sweet smell of dough turning into loaves. Nathan encourages that fantasy -- she loves this life, despite its toils -- but also explains that driving past “rosy girls and guys my age who are wrapping up their nights while I’m beginning my morning…can honestly make [me] feel like a real dork sometimes.”

More: Read our community's tips for perfectly flaky biscuits.

Biscuits

Nathan and her whole staff take that start of the day very seriously: “I hope to start people’s days with this sense of absolute abundance -- with too much color, a little too loud, a little too much -- to make people feel loved and cared for and go out in the world,” she explained.

Many cookbooks born out of recipes or cafés feel like an act of preservation, first and foremost: “This is the food I serve; people like it; here are my recipes.” But the purpose of Huckleberry is more benevolent, and more earnest. Just as Nathan wants her customers to leave satisfied and happy and high on Blueberry Cornmeal Cake (one of the most-requested recipes in the book, she says), she wants bakers to feel empowered:

"I would love to, like, demystify baking a little bit and take the pressure off and just have people enjoy themselves and get messy. Entertaining and baking have become so pressure-filled -- I would much rather have people feed themselves and enjoy themselves and have a sense of humor, to throw away their kitchen timers and smell their cookies and smell their pies [to know that they’re done]. It makes you much more present. For me, it’s like yoga."

Whether you call it yoga or a morning fix or an act of love, you’ll find yourself covered in flour more frequently after picking up this book, in pursuit of Maple Bacon Biscuits or Walnut-Jam Scones or Nathan’s dad’s famous pancakes. And that’s exactly how she wants things. “I just hope that the book is a mess -- there’s no better compliment than picking up [your book] at someone's house and it’s covered in stuff and your kid has spilled hot chocolate all over it.”

More: Read Alice Medrich's 3 tips for chocolate ganache success. Then pour ganache all over your favorite book!

Chocolate Ganache

That beautiful mess is something that Nathan embraces both at home and at her bakery, and now, in her book. Her son, Milo, is already an avid cook, willing to peel carrots and eager to bake muffins for garbage men and then hand them out on chilly early mornings. Her bakers blast Dolly Parton; she’s a fan of old-school hip hop. The Fresh Blueberry Brioche -- whose maw you see gaping on Huckleberry’s cover -- spills out of itself, abundant in all the best ways. “I wanted that on the cover because I wanted people to know that that sexy, imperfect look is what you’re gonna find in this book,” explains Nathan. Her food is “super approachable and really delicious first, before trying to look stuffy and perfect.”

The headnote for that brioche ends:

“Don’t slice it, just drop it in the middle of your table and have people rip it apart right from the oven. That’s love.”

We have one very beautiful copy of Huckleberry to give away! To enter, tell us in the comments: What is your favorite breakfast to make for other people? We'll pick a winner next Monday, September 15th.

Update: Sheila Litman is our winner! We hope you enjoy your copy of Huckleberry.

A savory dutch baby - it looks impressive but is so full of love, comfort and nutrition. I love nestling half avocados in the batter and filling them with an egg so the dutch baby rises up around them!

My husband and I love to make a big skillet of hash for friends. We just use some potato, hopefully some bacon or sausage, plus whatever's in the fridge. That plus fried (and now poached! so proud) eggs to order--always a good answer to that weekend morning headache...

Donna J. September 15, 2014
I love to bake quiche. Served with seasonal fruit salad with a maple syrup/ cinnamon topping.

Cornmeal pancakes

Susan N. September 15, 2014
It's not a fancy breakfast, but I love making pumpkin chocolate chip bread for friends and family. I make it year round, but I'm glad that it's finally September so it's slightly more acceptable to make pumpkin things without receiving weird looks.

Judy September 15, 2014
Family favorite is buttermilk waffles with fresh berries, whipped cream and of course local maple syrup.

Kallie H. September 15, 2014
This summer I perfected a peach and huckleberry coffeecake to use up the pounds of fresh fruit we always seemed to have around. It's especially lovely with a cup of tea and a boiled egg.

Cheryl September 15, 2014
It's a toss up between huevos racheros and an overnight french toast casserole. Yum!

cookinginvictoria September 15, 2014
We like to make for family & friends multigrain buttermilk waffles flecked with toasted walnuts or pecans, dressed up with either local berries (if in season), a spiced apple or pear compote, or my spiced maple nut butter. Maple syrup is always on the table with lots of crispy bacon, French press coffee, and freshly squeezed fruit juices.

sara_lenton_ September 15, 2014
I suppose I usually make pancakes for people, and that was my first love, but Creme Brulee French Toast (from epicurious) is way easier since you can prep it the night before and just pop it in the oven, and it's a major crowd pleaser. Serve it with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

Shannon M. September 15, 2014
Cinnamon Buckwheat waffles with homemade apple-ginger syrup. Sometimes I get crazy and put bacon in the waffle.

A simple congee cooked with sweet yams served with spicy pickled mustard greens, pickled radishes, spicy fermented tofu, pork floss, and a tea egg. And if we have some at the moment, Taiwan style sweetened soy milk to drink.

I love making French Onion Soup inspired quiche, along with a sweet loaf of something with an equally sweet spread, homemade sausage or crispy maple bacon and spiced, brewed coffee. Now I'm hungry...

Sheila L. September 14, 2014
I love waking up with my grandchildren in the house as it gives me the excuse to get out the griddle or waffle iron and make some indulgent pancakes, crepes or waffles. We all get involved and the table is laden with jams and syrups. We laugh a lot and get sticky. It is the best start to my day.

Marian B. September 15, 2014

My favorite thing to make other people for breakfast is shakshuka. Most people I know wouldn't think of eating something so savory for breakfast plus it's a dish that tastes way better fresh so the more the merrier!

Waffles, or pancakes, with fruit and chocolate and spices added in - with a plate of bacon on the side, to provide that salty counterpart to the sweetness!

Chef September 14, 2014
Ritz eggs ---- scrambled eggs cooked in a double boiler, soft and luscious, beautiful & satiny !! It's perfect for entertaining too -- you can start it, stop it, put it back on and have it ready just when you want. Then chives on top @ the end. Paired with the dried fruit scones from Marion Cunningham's The Breakfast Book. And Lemon Curd

I am a baker at a local bakery (currently eating my breakfast at 12:40 am, to be in for work at 1 ha), so I spend all morning making other people's breakfasts! Croissants are my focus, so I love serving a croissant on the days when everything comes together, the dough, the lamination, the shaping, the proofing, and the baking, to make a perfect croissant. There's a lot that can go wrong!

Mambi September 14, 2014

I make Kick-Ass French Toast. It starts, of course, with Texas Toast. I take the time to steep milk with Cinnamon Plus (a secret blend of spices) and Vanilla Bean Paste which enhances the flavor. Then its blended together with eggs and my secret ingredient, lemon zest. Not only does this breakfast kick ass, but it is to die for.

shannon September 13, 2014

I love making anything yeasted--something that rises overnight in the fridge, and is freshly baked off in the AM. And I don't have to get up ridiculously early to accomplish it. I love all breakfast baking and have been looking forward to this cookbook!

huevos rancheros or pancakes from rosé cafe reciepe with turkey sausage and cheddar cheese embedded not separated, all in one. Something that a local well loved breakfast place made special, off the menu which is now gone. Made theses for many, so loved. Solid breakfast.

Leigh September 13, 2014
Light buttery buttermilk biscuits like my grandmother taught me to bake (she is a Southerner) with homemade jam - strawberry, apricot or Georgia peach - raw milk butter and sourwood honey (bought from a roadside stand while wandering aimlessly). Add a few biscuits cut open, buttered and toasted under the broiler for some crunch and texture. Rich coffee and tea lattes for friends who are family, and finish with an afternoon nap in a hammock or porch cushions and smiles on everyone's faces.

Blair L. September 13, 2014
Favorite breakfast I ever made was eggs Benedict all from scratch! It was a labor of love for my husband's birthday. Only problem is now he asks for it all the time! ;-)

tartandsweet September 13, 2014
Pancakes, always, and seasonal if we can. Berries or stone fruits in spring and summer, sauteed apples and pumpkin in fall. Winter is winter, so you get some citrus on the side. There is something about fresh-squeezed orange juice that says love. All that being said, my favorite breakfast to *make* is scones, same approach as above. But I mostly make those for me ~ to satisfy my own love and cravings.

Courtney September 13, 2014

Garlic fried rice, eggs (a few over easy plus a scrambled set), and "Adobo Flakes" (aka pitaw) - pulled chicken and/or pork from (Filipino) adobo, cooked until crispy with a reduced sauce from the original adobo pot. A bowl of fresh diced tomatoes, fresh cilantro, and some preserved red egg on the side. Everyone stands around while everything cooking, kids and adults try to pilfer a taste...happy days.

I like to make an ethnic breakfast - a skillet of chorizo (the Mexican kind) and potatoes, with eggs either scrambled in or I make wells and put a lid on and steam them until they're cooked with perfectly runny yolks. Served with corn tortillas, slices of avocados, and other add-ins, Mexican green onions, limes, cilantro, some homemade salsa.

borntobeworn September 13, 2014
I like to buy some good bread from the French bakery the day before and make breakfast sandwiches for everyone. I'll fry eggs, cook a slab of bacon in the oven, and sauté some vegetables (onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, what ever is on hand). My secret ingredient is to slather some homemade pesto on the bread. Yum!

On Sunday morning we have this tradition where I make waffles and pancakes for our gang. The waffles and pancakes are light and airy, topped with mixed berries and a dollap of whipped cream or sheep yoghurt and you can't forget the pure maple syrup. Soooooo Good!

taochild September 13, 2014
I like to make a French toast buffet, with everything I think would make good French toast...sliced bananas, toasted walnuts, mini chocolate chips, fried apple slices, fresh strawberries, different syrups, whipped cream, flavored cream cheeses...whatever comes to mind. We use French bread for the toast. Add a cup of coffee, some bacon, and a couple eggs, and it is a memorable breakfast with friends.

For Christmas morning it must be cinnamon rolls. The recipe came from my great grandmother, was adapted by my mother and now I make them. They aRe sticky gooey and have an obscene amount of butter, sugar and cinnamon. It isn't Christmas without these!!

Cinnamon rolls are simply the best thing to make for a family breakfast. Because they are made ahead of time, all you have to do is pop them in the oven. And everyone loves waking up to the smell of cinnamon permeating the house.

Mary C. September 13, 2014
Huevos rancheros. No contest!

Monique September 12, 2014
I really love to grind oat groats and soak them overnight in water. In the morning I get out of bed before everyone else, (a significant feat for a morning dreamer like me) and cook the oats until silky and creamy, then mixing in either a combination of blue cheese, cashews, with ginger spread. or dried mango, toasted sesame and ginger spread. The trick between the two is to get a flavor profile that's adventurous and expansive. A way to meet people with a unique sharing experience. I really love to make oats for people. It feels good.

Abi M. September 12, 2014
My favorite food to bake and serve for breakfast is yeasty, fluffy sweet rolls: blueberry, lemon, apple butter--or the classic cinnamon! I'd love to add to my breakfast repertoire with this book though!

When having people over for breakfast or brunch I like to cook Toads in the Hole (batter with small Italian sausages, topped with thin slices of onion, cherry tomatoes and sprigs of thyme baked in a casserole dish). I like to serve it with Dijon mustard, red pepper jelly and brie cheese with fruit. It's always good with a coffee martini too. We can eat family style which is always nice.

ATG117 September 12, 2014
Oh, and baked french toast is probably my favorite dish to make others: easy, homey, beautiful, and a crowd pleaser.

ATG117 September 12, 2014
This review is written phenomenally. So rarely do I feel compelled to buy a cookbook based on a review, but I can't wait to get my hands on this one.

TryItSheSaid September 12, 2014
New England Spider Cake, a cornmeal cake with cream that "spiders" its way throughout the center is what I like to make for special occasions. Its genius is that it's as unexpected as it is delicious. For everyday, oatmeal cooked in milk or soy milk. It's messier, but so worth it.

Tiffany September 12, 2014
Can't go wrong with buttermilk pancakes and adding a little bacon grease to the batter. It's my Dad's favorite and I have no problem cooking a large batch.

Sara S. September 12, 2014

Alison September 12, 2014
I often make my husband breakfast on weekends (as consolation for waking him up so early) and he loves my eggs - fried, scrambled or turned into an omelette. Served with a side of buttered toast and coffee, he always seems happy.

Stephanie P. September 12, 2014
According to my mom's family, I make my great-grandma's rice pudding better than any of the other women in that family. I seem to have the perfect timing and touch to make it incredibly creamy. I love making it for the whole family when we are together at holidays or spending a weekend at our cabin.

Emily W. September 12, 2014
My favorite breakfast to cook for others is to ask them how they like their eggs. It's a simple gesture, but one I take with great seriousness, to ask them in exact detail and to then give them a plate of their request.

TinaEllen September 12, 2014
My favourite thing to cook anyone for breakfast is my chile-maple glazed pork belly confit. It's crispy, fatty and a perfect sweet and savory combo. Goes great with cornmeal waffles!

kelsey September 12, 2014
homemade granola and fresh fruit parfaits

Ashley-Marie September 12, 2014
I love to make a big pan of bread pudding for a group brunch at home. My favorite thing to do is use a few different breads (it's a way to use up odds and ends of loaves, plus since it's a filipino-american household there are some weird rice-based breads usually and it helps create different textures!). Then the milk-egg mixture is usually sweetened and flavored with some sort of citrus (orange usually) and poured in. Then top with chocolate chunks and put in the oven. It's really fun for me to put together and I can feed my friends and housemates with just one big pan of food instead of being at the stove flipping pancakes all morning (not going to lie though, I still love making pancakes). The chocolate chip orange scented bread pudding is so wonderful with some tea or coffee!

Devon G. September 12, 2014
My favorite way to serve breakfast is with my mom's famous cinnamon rolls. They take 3 hours from start to finish, but everyone who's had them agrees that they're the best thing ever!!

Cindy C. September 12, 2014
my favorite breakfast to make are cinnamon rolls (or variations of it - pumpkin, orange cranberry, chocolate). they are easy to prep the day before ahead and just let thaw and bake the morning of for delicious, straight-from-the-oven goodness without having to wake up too early!

My favorite are my Grandchildren. They get stirred eggs with Gruyere , roasted cherry tomatoes , and homemade crusty bread for dipping. Clafoutis is their favorite baked dessert. Since nobody else they know makes these things they are very special and they call it "our breakfast". Oh they also get fresh squeezed OJ which puts it over the top.

sunflourbaking September 12, 2014
I love entertaining guests at our remote, off the grid "camp" in the wilds of Northern Maine. Sitting lakeside on the porch with mountain views, the occasional bald eagle or loon and if we're really lucky a moose to delight us. Strong camp coffee, perked the old fashioned way, freshly caught trout baked with lots of lemon and herbs from the garden, farm fresh and simple scrambled eggs with cheese, seasonal fruit, maple/olive oil granola (courtesy of food52) with yogurt, fresh squeezed juice, and always, always a yummy breakfast pastry made in a very out of date oven. Specialties include cinnamon "beasts", my extra large version of a cinnamon roll, scones or muffins with wild blueberries or raspberries picked from the recently logged forest, and hearty grain versions of coffee cake. Luxuriating over good food and conversation before heading out to enjoy the beauty around us!

Shikha K. September 12, 2014
I make my own concoction for people - homemade cinnamon toast crunch made with Kahlua and brown butter, served with yogurt as a parfait!!

The weekends are all about fresh fruit, thick coffee, and garlicky scrambled eggs! And if there happens to be a few chunks of Point Reyes white cheddar laying around, hey, why not?

eggwhites_and_sugar September 12, 2014
I always make a big ol' strata for breakfast guest. Satisfying, easy and make-ahead. What could be better than that?

Any egg-y, cheesey- bread-y recipe works great, but I just tried smitten kitchen's corn, cheddar & scallion strata and it is divine.

Julie September 12, 2014

I hardly make the same weekend breakfast when it is just the beau and I - I like to experiment. But when having people over, I like to make egg sandwiches. English muffins, eggs baked in ramekins (adorable, perfect size, and can do a ton at a time), and mix up the toppings! I would like to experiment with the recipes in this book!!!

fiveandspice September 12, 2014
I've been on the shelf about getting this book - how could I be, right? I know. But I have no more space on my shelf, and I never even get to look through the books I have anymore...- but now I need it because Zoe sounds even exactly as wonderful as I envisioned her in my mind, and I need blueberry brioche in my life and that quote - “I hope to start people’s days with this sense of absolute abundance -- with too much color, a little too loud, a little too much -- to make people feel loved and cared for and go out in the world,”- is simply the best thing I've heard in a long time. Love love love love love. I don't have a go-to breakfast though. Different every time! :) (there's usually eggs and vegetables and either biscuits, scones, or a fruit-laden cake, though.)

AntoniaJames September 12, 2014
Pancakes with freshly-picked blueberries, when in season in my front yard; otherwise, waffles with blueberries in light syrup (canned shortly after picking when in season in my front yard). I'm enjoying reading, and getting new ideas from, the other responses here! Cheers, everyone. ;o)
