It's surprising to me that Rose Levy Barenbaum wasn't included. Not as outrageous as omitting Maida Heatter, but her cookie recipes contain a relentless attention to detail that would surely speak to some readers. I suppose her "Cookie Bible" would be the logical choice. I tend to find her recipes a little impractical- making a batch of cookies may take a couple of days and require buying 4 different kinds of sugar, but they'll be good, and you'll probably learn something.

I come from a country that is... possessed by making cookies. Specifically Christmas cookies. Maybe you have heard of the bredele markets in Alsace at Christmas time, where you can buy many varieties of small cookies. That is the closest to what happens where I come from. In the Czech Republic, it is standard to make 12 different types of cookies, but people get quite fanatical about cookie baking, and some make up to 60 different varieties. These are all tiny and beautifully decorated cookies -- some cookies are familiar here, like the vanilla crescent and the Linzer cookie -- but others no one here knows: the huntsman's button; beehives and wasp nests; Little Ischler Tortes (cookies, not cakes); chessboard cookies; bear paws; and on and on.
I try to find cookbooks that capture more than a chocolate chip cookie, maybe refine a cookie I already make, or teach me some new ones to add to the repertoire. I have many, many, cookie books. Nick Malgieri's Swiss Cookie spread that grace a cover of Gourmet magazine in the late 1980s or early '90s was one of the best, ever. And so is his cookie book. I use his recipes as standards in my repertoire -- he is the only one to offer such a god selection. My only beef is that I really wish he would use weights instead of measures, which is how I prefer to bake. So one very strong voice in support of Nick Malgieri!
And here is a link that describes Czech Christmas cookie making, a cookie story I wish someone in North America would finally cover. http://www.pragueartelstyleblog.com/interviews/czech-christmas-cookie-mania.aspx

BraveTart's brownie recipe is phenomenal. However, it most definitely has chocolate in it - 6 oz of ~72% cacao.

Really enjoying this best cookie book discussion as no matter how old you've become, there's still more one can learn that might surprise even the best of the best chefs and home cooks/bakers.
I too was curious as about the delicious looking cookie shown, noticed the link to the cookie had been added saved it right away so I can make them next weekend since I just finished baking an old recipe for Dad's cookies.
Should add.. I have most of the cookie books mentioned with the exception of Brave Tart and the Cookie Collection. Both of which have been in my favourite list on Amazon but being in Canada, cookbooks are more expensive than US price on average about $15- $20 more so have to choose wisely when living on a limited pension.

Take it from someone who recently made a Linzer torte and forgot the sugar; looking delicious is no guarantee.

Please don't ever forget Maida Heatter! You could dive into any of her books as a complete novice and learn to be an accomplished baker. Check out her Maida Heatter’s Cookies and Maida Heatter’s Brand-New Book of Great Cookies. Her directions are very explicit: follow them and you will not fail.

Also her Book of Great Cookies- ridiculous that she wasn't included, still the best cookbook writer ever.

About 6 weeks before Christmas, I ordered about 10 cookie books from our library. They included the Martha Stewart book and Dorie's Cookies, as well as a Nick Malgieri book, some Williams Sonoma books, a kids cookie book and a Chicago Tribune Christmas Cookie collection of prize-winning recipes. While I found at least one recipe to try from each book, the absolute winner--and the only book my daughters and I wanted to keep for a while after Christmas--was Dorie's Cookies. I love it! Paging through, almost every recipe sounds delicious and many are quite unique. I was a little disappointed in the Martha Stewart book. The two recipes I tried were not standouts upon eating them.
Now I am going to order The Cookie Collection as well. I'm eager to see how it measures up to your reviews! Thanks for an entertaining roundup.

Sad to find out the bold print in the article isn’t a link to the recipe like in most articles :(

Lifelong cookie person here—be still my heart, love this post! I’ve bought a wall of cookie books in my time, and when Dorie’s book came out, I found my cookie homeland of deliciousness. She is the master baker of our time. I give a copy to every baker I know. Thanks for a fabulous story, and happy baking to all who hold a poignant and sacred spot in their hearts for excellent cookies!

I just looked for a Kindle version of The Cookie Collection By Brian Hart Hoffman, and I only see it in hardcover.

Me too! I can only get kindle books right now. I was at least hoping I could find the recipe for the Ginger Molasses Sugar Cookies online...but so far no success. sad.

This is an excellent post. I love Dorie and have added all of these books to my library queue to check out over the blustery month of January! Can't wait to make World Peace cookies. I've heard so much about them and need to make them asap

While I hardly need another "world's greatest chocolate chip cookie" recipe, a promise is a promise- wasn't there supposed to be a recipe here?

Hi Smaug! Our reviewers came up with the great idea to work through the cookie books by trying a chocolate chip cookie recipe from each book (as well as baking many other recipes)—and they *did* reveal which recipe they thought was the best! You'll have to read the review to see which book won, and then check out the book for the recipe :)

Promise her anything, but give her Arpege (always wondered how that one would work out in real life- not well, I'd guess). I've made so many variations on chocolate chip cookies that at this point I seldom bother with recipes; might give it a shot anyway, but I have a suspicion that the winner is going to be covered with salt or stuffed with miso or some such similar outrage.

What a wonderful effort by Laura, Matt, and Jody!
Does anyone have dream topics of books they'd like to see reviewed (or even review themself!)? Maybe a favorite vegetarian cookbook? or their favorite cookbook published in 2020?

As a college student living in a small apartment, I think it would be cool to see dinner for one/dinner for two cookbooks reviewed! I feel like most cookbook dinner recipes are family style and don't scale down well and I don't always want to end up eating all 6 servings by myself over the course of a week.
