What a winderful and moving article. Your granma was my mom's sister in law and my aunt. I remember Aunti Ju as a wonderful cook. Her samboosak was always so perfect. When we had a special anniversary party Aunti Ju was right there, chopping, stirring, tasting. I miss her. I'm so glad you are carrying on the family traditions .

Thank you for such a beautifully written article. I am a descendant of Aleppian Jews who migrated to Beirut and then to Alexandria before landing in Canada in the early 50’s. I have just self published a family and friends cookbook containing my mother’s, my aunt’s, and my Nonna’s recipes with stories and photos accompanied them. Food evokes so many memories and these recipes are the heritage of a community that today exists only in memory.

I am astounded how much your family history parallels mine. Turkey, persecution, southern France, New Jersey. Wow. The recipes made me long for foods my grandmother pieced together from the tatters of her history with different cultures blending in and coloring her memories. It resulted in hybrid or fusion foods that feel familiar to me in the foods of other cultures. I too developed my love of cooking after she was gone but there is no one left to pass down recipes so your recipe will go into my file as a link to my hazy past. Thank you for the beautifully written article.

Charles what a touching and beautifully written article. One that conjures up wonderful memories for me, of your grandma, my little Auntie Ju hard at work in the kitchen. Always insisting on doing everything herself, she and my mom were truly a culinary force! Thank you for sharing and reminding us of what is truly important in our lives.

Thank you so much for this beautiful essay, Charles. Your Aunt Adele is my mother, and I have many of her recipes written down on index cards, including Phyllo with Sutlaj, which has been a hit when I make it for friends. This week I made a pot of Beezeb Jura, also my mother's recipe. My middle eastern and Jewish cookbooks are notated with amendments from my mother. I'm so lucky to have grown up with such a great cook as my mother.

That was a beautifully written article. My Mom, your Auntie Adele, taught me to make "Fingers with Libah" when I was a teenager . Though I haven't made it in many years, I had made it lots of times and it was always a hit.
