One bright side of these dreary winter months? Citrus season. And this year, it’s proving to be the gift that keeps on giving. While margaritas are often linked to summery beach days, they shine just as bright in February—and maybe even better. Maybe that's why National Margarita Day is on the 22nd? Whether you're hunkering down inside to avoid the snow or living somewhere where you can sit out in the sun, we like to think that this internet-sanctioned holiday is the perfect excuse to mix up a pitcher.

To make the most of this season’s citrus, we’ve rounded up six recipes that blend classic margarita flavors with smoky, spicy notes. Think roasted grapefruit syrups, chili salt rims, and more. We'll cheers to that.

1. Mid-Winter Margarita

A touch of fresh grapefruit juice makes this margarita perfect for winter. The tartness is nicely balanced with a hint of homemade chili salt on the rim (just combine sea salt and ground chile peppers).

2. Grapefruit-Sage Margaritas

The honey-sage simple syrup adds an herbal twist that elevates the puckery flavors here. This margarita feels like the sophisticated cousin of the classic.

3. Smoky Pear & Ginger Margarita

Smoky mezcal complements the natural sweetness of pear, creating a complex and cozy drink. While the fresh version of the fruit might not be in season, this recipe calls for pear nectar, which is available at most grocery stores.

4. Ginger Margaritas

Spicy ginger syrup adds an unexpected kick to this margarita, making it feel extra warm and comforting—something we can really appreciate in February.

5. Blood Orange Mezcal Margarita

Blood orange brings a vibrant burst of color and wintry flavor to this margarita. The mezcal adds a layer of smokiness that’s also fitting for the season.

6. Roasted Grapefruit Margaritas

Roasting the grapefruit brings out its natural sweetness, making it the perfect cocktail mix-in. This recipe is pre-batched, so you can make it ahead of time and enjoy a cold drink without the last-minute scramble.

Which of these winter margarita recipes will you be shaking up this National Margarita Day?
