A question about a recipe: Deep Chocolate Cake with Orange Icing

I have a question about the ingredient "strong coffee (or use instant espresso)" on the recipe "Deep Chocolate Cake with Orange Icing" from merrill: does this mean ground/instant coffee powder or does one have to actually make the coffee and use the liquid? Thanks!
