I have a mix of beans here, but threw out the package long ago. Do I soak these, or just throw them in the soup and simmer a long time?

Usually you bring it to a boil, reduce to simmer and cover until done.
I like to soak mine for at least 2-3 hours or alternatively, use a crockpot or slow cooker. It cooks beautifully in a slow cooker. Add a little finely chopped onion, seasonings (if using any) and I like to use a little bit of crushed tomato or tomato paste. Mix, cover and let it simmer away slowly!
