What is a good substitute for nigella seeds? I have a recipe that calls for them, but don't have the time to go shopping to find some. Thank you. ;o

Yes, I'd use it to make paanch phoron, to be used in a tadka (with tavoor dal). Perhaps I should just add a chopped onion to the dal? ;o)

Hmmm that depends on what you're making. They have only a faint onion flavour, so sesame seeds (white or black) would probably work if you're just looking to sprinkle some on top of a bread. I'd go with something really mild like that.

Or they can generally be left out entirely, too.

Oops, just saw the tag "tadka" - in this case, I wouldn't do sesame seeds! Agree with HalfPint on the cumin or celery see. Or you could just add some finely chopped onion sauteed in ghee/butter/oil.

I think you can use cumin seeds or celery seeds as substitutes
