What spice should I use instead of star anise in a cranberry agrodolce made with red wine, red wine vinegar and vanilla?

Ginger + lemon? Allspice + juniper berries? (I don't care much for star anise.). Thank you! ;o)

Not a spice, but fresh rosemary can add a nice note to sweet/sour flavors, especially if you'll be serving it with roast pork or poultry. (I'm with you on the star anise; makes everything taste like Good & Plenty to me.)

What about cardamom? Though ginger lemon sounds great too.
