Allspice is a single berry or bud. The name itself is misleading and it was christened that because it tastes like a mix of spices. You can blame that one on the Brits.

Allspice is a seed that comes from the Jamaican bay tree. As far as alternatives go, I'd recommend a mixture of 4 parts cinnamon, 1 part clove and 1 part nutmeg.
