dutch crunch topping goes soft

I love dutch crunch/tiger bread and have made it several times. It always comes out perfect from the oven, but after a day or two the topping goes soft, dusty, and crumbles off completely when you bite into it or attempt to slice it. It doesn't seem to matter if the bread is stored in a bag or not. Does anyone have success in making this last past day 2? Thanks in advance for any advice --

@ShannonDee, have you tried cooling it in the oven? King Arthur Flour has a really interesting article on oven cooling to keep your baked goods crispy,

What a great suggestion. Thank you so much! I'll definitely try that.
