Did you thaw the cherries before using them?
The recipe I have is pretty basic:
2kg. cherries pitted
juice and zest of 1 lemon
Cook together about 20 min. or until cherries break down. Measure and add 3/4 c. sugar per 1 c. cherries. Bring to boil for a while; do jam test.

I didn't thaw them first because I'm lazy. I just let them thaw on the stove, then added the rest of the recipe. If you have time to thaw them, it seems like a good idea. You will have more liquid than if you had used fresh cherries, but it should all work out in the end.
