A question about a recipe: Pasta and Bean Soup with Kale, Revisited

I have a question about the recipe "Pasta and Bean Soup with Kale, Revisited" from Merrill Stubbs. Is this both a 12.5 oz can of chopped tomatoes and then more chopped tomatoes? They seem like similar amounts / equivalents, so just want to make sure that this recipe does indeed need both.

Yes, you need both canned as well as fresh.
In step 3 the canned tomatoes are mashed into the bread and then later the chopped fresh tomatoes are added in.
