How to mash canned artichokes without any mixers?

I would like to make artichoke aioli

Drain artichokes.
Reserve the liquid in case you want to thin out the aioli or add it to soup. Otherwise discard.
Finely chop the artichokes, use a food mill or (possibly) a potato masher.
Mix with the remaining aioli ingredients.
