When pan-searing scallops do you turn them over? When?

My dad makes great seared scallops. He makes sure they're patted dry before searing, uses a hot pan with a bit of oil, doesn't move them around, and flips them only once. Timing depends on thickness of scallops but he says not to overcook them.
