I think to "cook as the French do" or "clean as the French do" could mean different things to different people. The French are known for savoring their meals, enjoying long, lingering dinners often with a fresh loaf of bread and wine. As far as cleaning as the French do, I interpret this as the kind of ingredients and tools you are using in your household.
