Ice cream maker, is it necessary?

Hi Lorienrr! First off, yum, this recipe looks delicious.

Secondly, unfortunately, ice cream makers are just one of those things you can't really sub for. You could try freezing the potato/custard mixture as is, granita-style, but it will make for unpleasantly large ice crystals—nothing resembling ice cream really.
