Wasn't the mix called Date NUT Bars? Man, I loved those things. Does anyone know if it was pecans in the crust. I'm going to try to recreate it from the website but it doesn't list nuts.

The recipe that I referenced in my post on August 20 uses walnuts in the filling, not in the crust. I have made it about 6 or 8 times, and everyone to whom I have given them has raved about them.

I, too, have been so disappointed for years that the mix was discontinued. Can’t imagine why. Though my mother was an excellent cook and baker, date bars were something she never made from scratch…no need to when Betty’s were so good. A few years ago I came across a recipe in Our State magazine and clipped it. When it mentioned using a food processor, I put it away because I didn’t own one. But a few months ago, I bought a small one. Found that recipe for Date Nut Bars again and have made it three times in two weeks. Yummy! Kudos to Lynn Wells! Google “date nut bars recipe in Our State magazine.” You’ll be glad you did!

My sister made the Betty Crocker date bars all the time as we grew up. She was telling me to put the 3 cups of chopped pitted dates 1 1/2 cups of water and a quarter cup granulated sugar in the blender and blend it gently she was saying when she used to make the date bar mix, it was more like a paste and not chunks of dates, it will make the consistency of the date bar mix, or like the Betty Crocker

My father was a superb chef and baker, There were very few boxes or cans in his kitchen, but this date nut bar mix was usually available. Please bring it back! The recipe on the back for pecan pie was easy and excellent. Please tell me how to reproduce it without the mix.

Please bring the date bar mix back. I can't find a recipe as good as these were. Thanks so much.

I looked at the receipe on the Betty Crocker website. My recollection was they had a bit of coconut in the crust. That’s not included as an ingredient in their published recipe. If my recollection is correct then that’s why (or at least one reason why) they don’t taste the same. Hey Mars brought back Forever Yours candy bars so maybe a campaign to bring back date bars could work!

We all need to write Betty Crocker and tell them we want them to bring back the date nut bars!! It's a good healthy snack for kids (and us adults that remember them from the 80's) Please bring them back Betty!!! And let us know when you do.

I was hoping the date bar mix was still around...darn it all!
I'm glad the gingerbread is ..right? My mom used to put a warm lemon sauce over the top, or Bird's Custard

I used to use the mix to make a different type of cookie. It was called fruitcake miniatures, and they were really good and easy to make. So I would love to have some way to replicate the mix without adding in the water or any other wet ingredients.

Haven't had those date bars in YEARS, but they were SO very good, especially in school lunches. Thanks for the memory. Here is a recipe for scratch Date Bars from Betty Crocker... Haven't tried this recipe myself (promise I will soon!), but the reviews are positive. https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/date-bars/4b716ead-523c-42eb-b589-e48dc5240c3d.

Lscrystal -
Have you tried a replica or retro recipe?
If not, have a look at this one:

Better watch out there, you are giving away your age! LOL! Gosh, that was discontinued decades ago- back in the 80's I think. It was sure a quick and easy way to make them, and yes- they were good. I think that they disappeared because people had stopped baking so much at home, and they were viewed as old fashioned things your grandma made. I still make my own from time to time, and my kids love them as much as I ever did. Maybe after all the baking rediscovery during quarantine time, people will shift away from the sourdough and start discovering desert wonders of the bygone years.

And/or if you make them often at home, you could prepare dry and wet parts of the recipes and store them for quick baking at home.
