My sister made the Betty Crocker date bars all the time as we grew up. She was telling me to put the 3 cups of chopped pitted dates 1 1/2 cups of water and a quarter cup granulated sugar in the blender and blend it gently she was saying when she used to make the date bar mix, it was more like a paste and not chunks of dates, it will make the consistency of the date bar mix, or like the Betty Crocker
I looked at the receipe on the Betty Crocker website. My recollection was they had a bit of coconut in the crust. That’s not included as an ingredient in their published recipe. If my recollection is correct then that’s why (or at least one reason why) they don’t taste the same. Hey Mars brought back Forever Yours candy bars so maybe a campaign to bring back date bars could work!
We all need to write Betty Crocker and tell them we want them to bring back the date nut bars!! It's a good healthy snack for kids (and us adults that remember them from the 80's) Please bring them back Betty!!! And let us know when you do.
I was hoping the date bar mix was still around...darn it all! I'm glad the gingerbread is ..right? My mom used to put a warm lemon sauce over the top, or Bird's Custard
I used to use the mix to make a different type of cookie. It was called fruitcake miniatures, and they were really good and easy to make. So I would love to have some way to replicate the mix without adding in the water or any other wet ingredients.
Haven't had those date bars in YEARS, but they were SO very good, especially in school lunches. Thanks for the memory. Here is a recipe for scratch Date Bars from Betty Crocker... Haven't tried this recipe myself (promise I will soon!), but the reviews are positive. https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/date-bars/4b716ead-523c-42eb-b589-e48dc5240c3d.

Better watch out there, you are giving away your age! LOL! Gosh, that was discontinued decades ago- back in the 80's I think. It was sure a quick and easy way to make them, and yes- they were good. I think that they disappeared because people had stopped baking so much at home, and they were viewed as old fashioned things your grandma made. I still make my own from time to time, and my kids love them as much as I ever did. Maybe after all the baking rediscovery during quarantine time, people will shift away from the sourdough and start discovering desert wonders of the bygone years.
when i finally found them in the early 80s at giant fredericksburg va i got 10 boxes...my mom got me hooked....the other thing i cant find any more is the chocolate and lemon pudding cake mixes
I am amazed no one has ever had these? We had them as kids back in th 60's,, delicious. Was hoping to get enuf people to get Betty Crocker to bring them back.
