Can I make this with wonder bread?

I've tried to make french toast with squishy white sandwich bread before and it was an epic flop. How stale does the bread need to be to give it enough body to hold the egg?

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time or ingredients on this recipe if what I had on hand was "wonder bread". You want a toothsome bread with enough body to hold up and soak up all the egg mixture.
